Teen Health Connection

Mental Health America of Central Carolinas (MHA)
A United Way member agency, MHA works to promote mental wellness through advocacy, prevention, and education. In addition to advocacy, MHA provides information and referral, and MHA’s certified staff delivers evidenced-based trainings in QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) suicide prevention, Mental Health First Aid – the Adult and Youth versions, De-escalation, Family Partner Certification, and more. MHA’s ParentVOICE program provides support for families of youth with emotional, behavioral and mental health challenges; Compeer is an evidenced-based friendship/socialization program matching community volunteers with adults living with mental health issues in a one-to-one match; and their Multicultural Advocacy program works with mental health service providers to assure cultural competence in service delivery.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Lake Norman/Iredell
NAMI is a nonprofit organization that provides support, education, and advocacy throughout the Lake Norman Region, Iredell County, and the surrounding areas with the intent of advancing the interests of all persons affected by mental illness and their families. They offer free educational classes such as Family-to-Family, a 12-week course to help family members better understand mental illness and how to communicate with their loved one, and Peer-to-Peer, a 10-session program for adults with mental illness who are looking to better understand their condition and journey to recovery taught by a trained team of people with lived experience. In addition, they have two ongoing support groups: 1) NAMI Connections– for those with mental illness, facilitated by an individual with lived experience; and 2) NAMI Family Support– for family members to process their struggles in supporting their loved ones with mental illness.

Queen City Harm Reduction (QCHR)
Center for Prevention Services’ Queen City Harm Reduction (QCHR) program provides direct services to people who use drugs and who are at high risk for Hepatitis C, HIV, overdose, and other major health issues in Mecklenburg County. Their staff & volunteers offer free sterile equipment and Naloxone (Narcan) to people who use drugs, people who use hormones, people who do sex work, and other marginalized groups. Their services help to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and overdose fatalities. Syringe Service Programs (SSPs) are an evidence-based method that curbs infection rates and drug misuse. QCHR offers life-saving supplies and empowers directly impacted people through connection, education, and linkage to a variety of healthcare options and social resources.

2-1-1 is an easy to remember, three-digit telephone number that connects people with important United Way agencies and community services to meet everyday needs and the immediate needs of people in crisis. For example, 2-1-1 can offer access to affordable high quality child care/after-school care; counseling and support groups; health services; food, clothing and housing and services for seniors and the disabled.
